What is a wireless LAN controller (WLC), and who should run it?
A wireless LAN controller is the system that configures, monitors and updates all your access points as one network. The access points carry the traffic; the controller is how you stay in charge of them.

Put two access points in a building and you have two separate Wi-Fi boxes. Put two hundred in a hotel and you need something to make them behave as a single network. That something is the wireless LAN controller, or WLC.
What a WLC does
- Configuration: one place to define WLANs, security, VLANs and radio settings, applied to every access point.
- Adoption: bringing new and replacement access points into the network.
- Monitoring: which devices are online, how many clients they serve, where the faults are.
- Radio management: channels and transmit power, so neighbouring access points cooperate instead of shouting over each other.
- Firmware: keeping the fleet on tested versions.
In most modern systems the controller sits on the management path, not the data path. If it disappears, guests stay online. What stops is your ability to change, grow or repair the network.
Where a controller can live
| Model | Who runs it | Strength | Weakness |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hardware appliance | You | Everything on site | Cost, and a box to maintain |
| Software on your server | You | Control, no licence fee in some cases | All the server work |
| Vendor’s cloud | The vendor | Nothing to run | Your network’s future depends on the vendor’s |
| Hosted, vendor-independent | A specialist | Nothing to run, and no single-vendor risk | A subscription |
Why this matters now
For years the vendor’s cloud looked like the obvious choice. September 2026 showed its weakness: when Cambium Networks entered administration, thousands of perfectly healthy networks were left with a controller whose future was measured in weeks. The hardware was never the problem.
The lesson is not “avoid the cloud”. It is that the controller should be run by someone whose job is running controllers, and that it should not depend on the fortunes of the company that made the access points.
What CloudWLC is
CloudWLC is a home for wireless LAN controllers. It hosts UniFi Network and cnMaestro controllers, dedicated to each customer, and it offers CloudWLC Control, our own controller for Cambium access points that needs no vendor cloud or licence server at all. One account, as many controllers as you need, run by the network assurance specialists at Optaro.
Quick answers
What does WLC stand for?
Wireless LAN controller: the system that configures, monitors and updates a fleet of Wi-Fi access points as a single network.
Does Wi-Fi stop working if the controller goes offline?
In most modern systems, no. Access points keep serving clients. You lose the ability to change settings, add or replace devices and monitor the network until a controller is available again.
CloudWLC is an independent service from Optaro. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or operated by Cambium Networks, HPE Aruba Networking, RUCKUS Networks, Ubiquiti or any other equipment vendor.
