cnMaestro Cloud alternatives: your four options, compared

With cnMaestro Cloud’s future limited to “at least through 1 October”, every Cambium Wi-Fi customer is weighing the same question: where does management of this network go next? There are four options. Here is what each one really involves.

1. Self-host cnMaestro On-Premises

This is Cambium’s own recommendation. You download the controller image, build a virtual machine, give it an address and a certificate, and re-point your access points at it. The software is familiar and your configuration model stays the same.

The cost is the part people underestimate. Cambium’s sizing guide asks for a server with 20 processor cores and 650 GB of fast storage for an estate of 25,000 devices, and even a small estate needs patching, backups, monitoring, certificate renewals and someone on call. On a public cloud, a properly run large deployment costs several thousand pounds a month once engineer time is counted.

2. Hosted cnMaestro

The same software, but somebody else builds and runs it: provisioning, trusted HTTPS, backups, updates and monitoring. With hosted cnMaestro on CloudWLC you also get a guided migration, where a browser extension collects your configuration from Cambium Cloud and rebuilds it on your new controller, so nothing is typed in again.

It is the fastest safe move. Its limit is the same as option 1: cnMaestro On-Premises relies on Cambium’s Cloud Anchor to add or remove devices.

3. An independent controller

The third option removes the dependency entirely: a controller that manages Cambium access points directly, with no cnMaestro, no Anchor account and no licence server. That is CloudWLC Control. You keep every access point, and you can add, replace and remove devices for as long as the hardware lasts.

It is built for hospitality by Optaro, and it grows in three phases at one price: Control, then Manage for day-to-day estate operations, then Optimise, which joins the controller to RF survey and network assurance.

4. Replace the hardware

Much of the advice circulating this month is to move to another vendor. For an estate that was due a refresh anyway, that is reasonable. For everyone else it means spending tens or hundreds of thousands of pounds to fix a problem that lives in the controller, not the ceiling. The access points are fine.

What we recommend

• Move this month, while Cambium’s cloud is running and migration is simple.
• Keep the hardware. It has years of life in it.
• Choose a home that does not expire. A controller that can still add a replacement access point in three years’ time is the difference between a network and a liability.
